The Winnipeg 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association held its First Annual Golf Tournament at Netley Creek Golf and Country Club on Saturday, September 15th. It was a little brisk that morning with frost still on the ground, and several players sporting balaclavas and winter gloves for the early part of their round. Once it got under way, the weather started to warm up and it turned out to be quite a nice day. We managed to get 62 players out, and for a first year, I think that this is a success. The big attraction this year was a $10,000 hole-in-one contest on hole #16. Unfortunately with the wind blowing between 40-60 km/h, there were only four people to hit the green. There was also another hole in one contest; on #3 for Big Bertha Callaway irons and one on #9 for 10 VIP rounds of golf at Netley Creek. Although there were some good shots, no one was able to cash in on the prizes. We also had a closest to the pin contest on #12 which Jan Coghill won for the ladies and Rob Shanas won for the men, with each receiving a free night at the Holiday Inn. There was a long drive contest on #18 with Scott Barbour winning for the men and Kimberly Gray winning for the ladies, with each of them receiving either a free City Championships and Open Qualifying spot, or $50 cash. Netley Creek was a great host, and the event itself went very well. There are so many people to thank for helping put this event on and for making it a success. Firstly, we’d like to thank all of our sponsors. Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to put this event on, so thanks to them and for all they did for us. Secondly, a big thank-you to all the W5 board members who make the trek out early to set up prizes, conducted the registration, and sell tickets. Finally, a big thank-you to VCJ supply who not only made all of our hole signs and plaques; but also donated a driver and two golf bags, and was also the sponsor for the $10,000 hole in one. Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting the event and the W5PBA. From the people that we have spoken with, it sounds like everyone had a great time and can’t wait for it next year. We will be looking at doing some new things for next year, including an earlier date and hopefully make it an even better event. One again I just want to thank everyone for coming out and helping out, and watch for advertisements this coming year for next year’s tournament. Best of luck to everyone this bowling season!
